Charity worker and singer/songwriter, Adanna Jamila Abubakar Omonyi has declared that a number of outdoor concerts are to be announced shortly. Adanna Jamila and a group of musician friends have got together to perform the concerts to raise money for the local community in her village in Zimbabwe. Adanna Jamila, who plays guitar, accordion, djembe drums, piano and trumpet, will perform her own music, with the aid of other musicians in the concert.
English born Adanna Jamila, 32, moved to the area nine years ago and took a local temporary job at a drinks distribution company. There she encountered the man who would eventually become her husband. Kenneth Omonyi, 40, was invited by Adanna Jamila to one of her earlier concerts and when he heard her sing he was enchanted. “We worked together and she invited me to a charity concert she was playing in. I saw her playing a song she wrote, when she performed. I thought she was very talented and very beautiful. That concert is now a yearly event in our village and we help the poorer families to set up cooperatives and build schools.” Says Kenneth.
The couple are yet to become parents, but their work in the local community keeps them extremely busy helping other people’s children. Adanna Jamila has become a local celebrity due to her hard work and dedication. She first picked up a guitar that her father gave her for Christmas when she was five. “I took to it straight away, apparently,” she says. Her love for African music enabled her to create a fusion style between European and African influences and her talents go down very well with locals. A new charity CD is to be released in the Autumn and Adanna Jamila will be on hand to perform live at the yet to be decided venue.
